How Does the 4″ Foot-Pad Multi-Directional Machinery Slider Work?

The Machinery Slider weighs 13 oz (0.37 kg) and measures 8″ in diameter × 1″ high. A 4-1/16″-diameter pocket is routed 1/2″ deep into the top surface.

The machine’s leveling pad, leg or other appropriate support point sits directly inside this recessed area. This leaves approximately 1/2″ of Machinery Slider material beneath the machine foot and an approximately 1/2″ retaining perimeter around the recessed pocket.

The recessed design helps capture the machine support point within the Machinery Slider so the slider remains positioned beneath it as the machinery changes direction.

Why Is the 4-1/16″ Recess Important?

Many industrial machines stand on leveling feet or machine legs rather than having a support point suited to a pin or bolt. This Machinery Slider was designed specifically for that situation.

A leveling pad or machine leg up to approximately 4″ in diameter can sit within the 4-1/16″ recessed pocket. Once seated in the pocket, the support point is captured by the surrounding portion of the slider rather than simply sitting on an unrestricted flat surface.

That allows the machine and slider to move together when the machinery needs to:

  • Move forward or backward
  • Move laterally
  • Change direction
  • Turn
  • Maneuver around obstacles
  • Be repositioned
  • Be aligned at its final installation location
The Machine Foot Sits Only 1/2″ Above the Floor

This is an important distinction. The Machinery Slider itself is 1″ high. However, the 4-1/16″ pocket is routed 1/2″ deep into the top of the slider.

Therefore, when the machine’s leveling pad or leg is fully seated within the recess, the bottom of that support point is only 1/2″ above the floor. This provides an exceptionally low machine-support height while still providing the retention needed for multidirectional movement.

That can be especially useful when moving:

  • Tall machinery
  • Equipment with limited overhead clearance
  • Machinery through restricted openings
  • Equipment into or out of shipping containers
  • Machines where additional elevation is undesirable
  • Machinery where keeping the leveling foot close to floor level is important
1/2″ Beveled Perimeter for Cracks, Gaps and Rough Floors

Industrial floors are rarely perfect. The 4″ Foot-Pad Multi-Directional Machinery Slider incorporates a 1/2″ beveled outer perimeter designed to help the slider transition over floor irregularities rather than meeting them with a square vertical edge.

This can help when encountering concrete cracks, expansion joints, gaps, worn concrete, damaged floor areas, floor transitions and other small obstacles and irregularities.

The ability to cross a particular floor irregularity depends upon the load, floor material, surface condition and size and shape of the obstruction.

When Should You Choose the 4″ Foot-Pad Multi-Directional Slider?

Choose this Machinery Slider when two conditions exist:

First, the machinery needs multidirectional movement. The machine may need to turn, change direction, maneuver or be positioned during the move.

Second, the machine has a leveling pad, leg or similar support point that can sit within the 4-1/16″ recessed pocket.

This makes the 4″ Foot-Pad Slider particularly useful for machinery that does not have an appropriate support arrangement for the standard Multi-Directional Slider’s 1″ pin/bolt opening.

Same Multi-Directional Slider — Specially Machined for Machine Feet

The standard 1″-hole Multi-Directional Slider and the 4″ Foot-Pad Multi-Directional Slider begin with the same molded 8″-diameter × 1″-high Machinery Slider. The difference is the machine-support interface.

For the 4″ Foot-Pad version, the center is routed by hand to create the 4-1/16″-diameter × 1/2″-deep recessed pocket.

This gives machinery movers two different ways to positively retain a Multi-Directional Machinery Slider beneath a machine, depending upon the design of the machine’s support point.

100% Non-Metallic — Absolutely No Metal in the Machinery Slider

The Machinery Slider itself is 100% non-metallic. It is manufactured from a high-performance engineered plastic resin and contains no metal wheels, no metal rollers, no bearings, no axles, no steel skate frame, no mechanical moving parts.

For machinery movers looking for non-metallic machinery skates, non-metallic machine skates or non-metallic machinery dollies, Machinery Sliders provide a different approach to heavy machinery movement: the machine travels on a low-profile engineered-resin sliding surface rather than metal wheels or rollers.

Designed as a Wear Item

Machinery Sliders are designed as wear items. The bottom of the slider moves directly across the floor, so normal machinery-moving use gradually wears the sliding surface.

Wear rate depends upon factors including machinery weight, distance traveled, load distribution, floor material, floor roughness, cracks and gaps, obstacles, and conditions of the individual machinery move.

There are no wheels, bearings or rollers to rebuild or replace. Instead, the Machinery Slider should be inspected for wear and physical condition and replaced when it reaches the end of its useful service life.

Approximately 10-Ton Capacity Per Machinery Slider

Each Machinery Slider is capable of supporting approximately 10 tons under appropriate loading conditions.

Additional Machinery Sliders can be used when required to support and distribute heavier loads. The correct quantity and placement should be determined from the machine’s actual weight, weight distribution, center of gravity, support points, floor conditions and machinery-moving plan. See our Questions & Answers page for the sizing math on larger moves, such as a 100-ton press setup.

What Surfaces Can These Machinery Sliders Be Used On?

Depending upon the load and conditions, Machinery Sliders can be used on many surfaces encountered during industrial machinery-moving work, including concrete, worn or damaged concrete, wood, tile, carpet, dock plates, and asphalt at reduced capability depending upon load and surface conditions.

The 1/2″ beveled perimeter helps the slider transition across many cracks, joints, gaps and other irregularities encountered on real industrial floors.

Which Multi-Directional Machinery Slider Do I Need?

There are two Multi-Directional Machinery Slider designs, and the correct choice depends primarily upon the machine’s support point. See our full Machinery Sliders vs. Dollies & Skates comparison for more detail.

Multi-Directional — 4″ Leveling Pad/Machine Leg Recess
8″ diameter × 1″ overall height. A 4-1/16″-diameter pocket is routed 1/2″ deep into the top of the slider. The machine’s leveling pad or leg sits inside the recess, leaving the bottom of the machine support point only 1/2″ above the floor. Choose this version when the machine has an appropriate leveling pad or leg up to approximately 4″.

Multi-Directional — 1″ Pin/Bolt Hole
8″ diameter × 1″ high. The machine rests on a 5″-diameter top support surface, while an appropriate pin or bolt engages the 1″ center hole to retain the slider beneath the machine. Choose this version when the machine’s support arrangement can use an appropriate pin or bolt. See the Multi-Directional Machinery Slider.

Single-Direction — Reinforced Front Bumper
The Single-Direction Slider measures 11-1/2″ × 8-1/4″ × only 3/8″ thick and uses a reinforced 1″ × 1″ front bumper to help retain the slider during movement in the intended direction. Choose the Single-Direction version when the machinery primarily travels along an established path rather than requiring repeated multidirectional maneuvering.

Is the 4″ Foot-Pad Multi-Directional Set Right for My Machine?

Choose this set when your machine has leveling pads, machine legs or appropriate support points up to approximately 4″ in diameter and the machinery must turn, maneuver, change direction or be positioned during the move.

The 4-1/16″ recessed pocket captures the machine support point, while its 1/2″ depth keeps the bottom of the leveling pad or leg only 1/2″ above the floor.

If your machine instead uses an appropriate pin or bolt arrangement, consider the 1″ Pin/Bolt Multi-Directional Machinery Slider.

If the move primarily requires one-direction travel, consider the 3/8″-thick Single-Direction Machinery Slider.

For machinery movers and riggers who encounter all three situations, the combination set containing four of each Machinery Slider style provides all three designs in one set.
